Supporting girls’ education in Senegal

In November, our program manager travelled to the Thiès region of Senegal to meet our local partner, who wants to equip 9 schools with sanitary blocks, primarily to promote girls’ education.

Worldwide, the lack of access to toilets at school causes girls to lose 20% of their school time, according to the UN.

In the Thiès region of Senegal, young girls living in precarious conditions are all too often enrolled in schools with no sanitary facilities. At the age of puberty, without access to the toilet, they can’t maintain their privacy and are absent during the period of their dreams. This situation accentuates the risk of dropping out of school, compromising their education and, by extension, their future.

With a measure as simple as installing sanitary blocks in schools, it is possible to overcome the causes of gender inequality in access to education.
