School transport for disabled children and young people in Dakar

Location
Dakar, Senegal
Context
The ESTEL specialized center cares for children and young people with disabilities suffering from various pathologies such as autism, Down’s syndrome, epilepsy, encephalopathy, mental retardation, polyhandicap and cerebral palsy.
The Center has 39 students and would like to increase its capacity.
Of the 39 pupils, 26 require school transport. Added to this number are the pupils who have applied for schooling, but have no means of transport to get to school, so are not currently enrolled. The center’s 9-seater bus is in poor working order. It’s not a sustainable solution!
In order to avoid outsourcing transport for some of the students, and to ensure that all students are able to attend, we need to acquire a new vehicle.
Partnership
The project partner is theAssociation ESTEL (Education Spécialisée et Technique d’Expression et de Loisirs), a Senegalese association active since 1999. The association’s vocation is to defend the rights of people with intellectual disabilities: education (autonomy and socialization), schooling and vocational training, with a view to making them more autonomous for better social integration. Defending their rights also involves lobbying public authorities and raising awareness among the Senegalese population.
