Context

India is the second most populous country in the world with 1.36 billion people, more than 50% of whom are under the age of 25.
The level of inequality is one of the highest in the world. More than 21% of India’s population lives on less than $2 a day.
Despite a high literacy rate (74%), the average level of schooling is low and girls’ education remains a challenge, especially in remote rural areas.

The situation in rural Uttar Pradesh is particularly difficult.
The female literacy rate is one of the lowest in India (55.57%). 51.3% of girls enrolled in school drop out: lack of access to toilets, to get married or to work with the family.

Partnership

PPES has been working since 2000 to improve the living conditions of girls in rural areas. It gives them access to free education and strengthens their position in society.

The school was founded by Virender (Sam) Singh from the village of Anupshahar. In creating this institution, Mr. Singh wanted to break the vicious circle of poverty by empowering the most vulnerable members of his society (girls) to take charge of their destiny.

It offers free education, employment opportunities, health care and improved livelihoods to girls and women from marginalized segments of society.
