Raising awareness of education among slum children

Location

Dehradun, India

Context

ASED partner Aasraa Trust looks after the general welfare of Dehradun’s most vulnerable children – those who live on the streets, who have no permanent home, who are sometimes orphans, victims of abuse, children whose parents work all day and are not there to look after them.
There is a lot of pressure on younger children to work.
Aasraa’s aim is to give these future generations the means to be strong, independent and gainfully employed.

Partnership

Aasraa Trust was established in 2009 when the two founders, Ms. Shaila Brijnath and Ms. Neelu Khanna, set up a tutoring program for 35 children living in a riverbed slum.

Today, 3,351 children are supported by Aasraa through 39 projects in the Dehradun district.

The association’s aim is to lift children out of poverty through a holistic approach encompassing education, vocational training, nutrition and health.
