Improving learning conditions for children with disabilities in Dehradun
Location
Dehradun, India
Context
The latest Indian Population Census (2011) reports that 26.8 million people live with a disability, or 2.2% of the population. Despite the country’s political efforts (including the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Act, 2016[1]) the situation of persons with disabilities remains difficult. The therapeutic approach is essentially medical; there is little mention of integration.
LRF, was recently elected “NGO of the Year” by the National Trust.
ASED’s partner, Latika Roy Memorial Foundation (LRF) is the only organization in the country that provides comprehensive services for people with disabilities from birth to adulthood, including a new and innovative initiative: a seniors’ club. Its multidisciplinary team of doctors, therapists, special educators, counsellors and psychologists offers a holistic, creative and joyful approach to child development and adult education.
LRF’s work is family-centred, involving parents, siblings and grandparents, and is also deeply rooted in the community.
