Technology for children with disabilities

Location
Rajasthan, India
Context
In India, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, schools were closed for almost two years. During this period, supporting education through technological means (tablets, cell phones, video conferencing, etc.) was fundamental to maintaining the link with students. Without these initiatives taken by a large number of schools, the loss of academic standards and the resulting dropouts would have been much greater, with far more dramatic consequences for the children.
As well as responding to the emergency situation, the use of technology in the school environment has proved to be very positive, especially for children with disabilities, and even more so for those affected by poverty.
- By disseminating part of the information, technological tools enable the teacher to spend more time with students and go further in explaining the subjects studied.
- Technology offers a variety of learning opportunities and approaches that engage, instruct and support struggling students with a myriad of tactics designed to interest, motivate and maintain the attention of children with disabilities.
- Introducing technology into schooling also enables students to acquire the digital skills they’ll need for their personal and professional lives, and thus strengthen their autonomy.
Project
- Equip 3 specialized schools and a drop-in center with interactive screens and computers adapted to children’s specific needs.
- Teacher training.
- Monitor and evaluate the integration of technology into teaching and make adjustments where necessary.
- Inform parents about the benefits of technology for their children’s schooling.
Impact
To improve the quality of learning in preparation for working life and empower around 500 students a year.
